[This is not your standard company line blog post. I hope it's OK to step outside that box for a little while.]
I’m in a deepish mood today. Not sad. Better described as “thoughtfully thankful.” (Sounds like a song title.)
I had the opportunity to listen to a dynamic speaker by the name of Simon Sinek who wrote Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. Like the book, his talk centered around the following idea:
Any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not money or profit– those are always results. WHY does your organization exist? WHY does it do the things it does? WHY do customers really buy from one company or another?
At the end of his talk he challenged all of us in the room to think about “why” we do what we do. I’m lucky I guess because I discovered the answer to that question years, and years ago.
Why I love what I do.
I love what I do because for every customer that comes in the store…and every successful transaction that occurs…we become a pivotal part of their lives in that particular moment. We help people “say” what’s on their minds and in their hearts.
I speak from experience when I tell you that words fall far short when it comes to the really important things in life. Saying, “Thank you,” “I’m sorry,” “I miss you,” “I love you” and all the other individual sentiments that are unique to our lives is a good thing. But to show those feelings with fine jewelry…well…to me it pushes the level of communication to an almost mystical level. We show…and in the blink of an eye…they know.
To love and be loved in return…
I heard that in a different speech…at a different time…in a different place…but I’ve never forgotten it. The speaker went on to say that NOTHING is more important than to love and be loved…and NOTHING symbolizes this truth more than diamonds. I tend to agree.
I still care about the “what” of my business. (Very much in fact.) Things like great quality…excellent pricing…a cool place…a great staff and thousands of other details need to be in place for a business to grow and prosper. But without YOU…and YOUR “why’s” none of it matters. The fact that you let us be a part of your lives at specific high points is something I don’t take lightly. In fact…it’s why I love what I do. (So thanks!)
